How to clean and care for your MeLuna

One of the great things about using a menstrual cup is that you are in control of the cleanliness. You do not have to rely on someone else to clean and pack it hygienically, as you do with tampons. The plastic (TPE) is commonly used for medical devices and can be easily cleaned and disinfected. MeLuna cups can be boiled or steam sterilized up to a temperature of 135°C / 275°F.

Every woman can decide on the method of sterilization that’s right for her.

Please note that the MeLuna menstrual cup should be sterilized for 2-3 minutes in plenty of boiling water before the first use.

Care Instructions :

After the end of your menstruation, you should thoroughly clean and sterilize your MeLuna. For storing your MeLuna menstrual cup, the supplied microfibre bag is ideal, as it provides maximum protection and air flow. You could also use a clean, lint-free cloth bag. Just be sure it is well-ventilated.

What Can Damage My MeLuna Menstrual Cup?

  • Improper cleaning: Never use solvent-based cleaners, corrosive substances or abrasives to clean your MeLuna, as these may damage the plastic.
  • Improper storage: UV rays can damage your MeLuna, though under normal storage conditions the risk of damage is very low. The MeLuna menstrual cup should not be left in direct sunlight and never expose your MeLuna Cup to very high temperatures (over 140°C / 284°F).

Recommendations For Cleaning During Use:

To clean your MeLuna menstrual cup during usage, you can rinse it under running water, or wipe it with toilet paper or paper towels. If you want a more intensive cleaning, vaginal wash (pH 3.5) can also be used. After draining and cleaning, the MeLuna cup can be inserted inside the vagina again. Sterilization is required after your menstruation ends, and before reusing for your next period.

Please be sure to only extract your MeLuna menstrual cup with clean hands.

How Do I Clean My MeLuna Menstrual Cup When I’m Out?

There are several options. You can wipe your MeLuna cup with toilet paper or paper towels before reinserting. If you have water at your disposal, you can also rinse your MeLuna menstrual cup before replacing. Carrying a cleaning cloth or a water bottle can be very helpful in public toilets, because there is not always a sink within reach.

Methods Of Disinfection:

Sterilizing in boiling water

  • On the stove: Bring water to boil in a small saucepan. Place your MeLuna menstrual cup in the water for 2-3 minutes, making sure that there is enough water in the saucepan so that your MeLuna floats.
  • In the microwave: Your MeLuna can also be disinfected in a microwave. MeLuna menstrual cups are made from TPE, a non-polar plastic which will not be heated by the microwave, but rather by the hot water. Simply place your MeLuna in the Meluna foldable disinfection container ( microwaveable ) and bring to a boil in the microwave.
  • Caution: Do not scald your fingers when you remove your menstrual cup.

PLEASE NOTICE: MeLuna menstrual cups should never be boiled dry or touch the bottom of the pot, as plastic will melt! Don’t leave the pot unattended! The use of an egg timer has been proven. Cooking time 2-3 minutes is sufficient.

TIP: A great way to sterilize your MeLuna menstrual cup is to put it inside a whisk, a big tea-ball, or a strainer. Place the whisk or strainer containing the MeLuna cup in boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Now you can easily remove the MeLuna from the boiling water, without scalding your hands!

Hot salt water: Sterilize your MeLuna in boiling water with a little salt. This helps to prevent discoloration and increases the cleaning effect.

Vinegar water: A little vinegar in the boiling water can help to prevent scale deposits and has a natural disinfecting and deodorizing effect. Use vinegar water hot or cold, with a 3% concentration of vinegar (see EU regulation global migration).

Disinfection by means of special disinfectants

Another method of sterilization is commercially-available disinfectants, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or chlorine water. If you choose one of these methods, please rinse your MeLuna thoroughly before reinsertion to prevent irritation of the vaginal mucosa by chemical residues.

TIP: With the Milton disinfectant tablets you can disinfect your MeLuna menstrual cup in 15 minutes.

Further Cleaning Advice:

Smell or discolorations of your MeLuna menstrual cup

Slight discoloration will often occur over a long period of use, and this is the case with all menstrual cups from all manufacturers. However, with regular and thorough cleaning these discolorations are slight. Unpleasant odors can be prevented. Your MeLuna cup should be removed every 8 to 12 hours. Some women have reported temporary changes of smell, which are likely due to various proteins in the blood. A menstrual cup may suddenly assume a different smell, although it has been cleaned as usual.

TIPS for special cleaning problems

Usually odors disappear when you place your sterilized MeLuna cup in a dry, well-ventilated place for several days. You can also place the MeLuna menstrual cup a few hours in a glass of denture cleaner, or sterilize with vinegar or salt water. Cleaning very hard to reach places (such as the cup holes) can be done with the Meluna cleaning brushes.
