Teething Signs and Symptoms

If your baby has been gnawing and chewing on everything, is generally unsettled, has red cheeks and is drooling, then chances are they're teething. Teething signs and symptoms are quite easy to spot, so if you have the feeling that your baby is teething then you are most probably right.

Teething is generally considered a very frustrating time for many people and babies alike. Some babies seem to cope quite well with the teething pain and discomfort of teething, however others can be completely miserable for weeks on end. It is comforting to know that there are several effective, safe and natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals which can help to improve the symptoms of teething for your baby and toddler. Some of my most favourite natural teething remedies are Punkin Butt Teething Oil and Baltic Amber Necklaces/Bracelets.

When do babies start teething?

There is just no definitive answer to this question. Babies generally start showing teething signs and symptoms within the first few month of life and get their first teeth between 4 and 7 months of age. Although it is rare, some babies are even born with teeth. It is also not uncommon for teeth to take 12 months or so to come through. Babies have tooth buds under the gums before they are born. When the teeth grow, the body releases chemicals which help the gum to part and the teeth to push through.

The teeth will grow through the gums in stages, usually beginning with the central incisors coming through between 6 and 12 months. The lateral incisors erupt at between 9 and 13 months, the canines between 16 and 22 months, the first molars between 13 and 19 months, and the second molars between 25 and 33 months. There are no set rules though so it is not at all uncommon for teeth to come through in a different order. Most kids have all of their primary teeth by the time they are about 3. All up they will have 20 beautiful little teeth.

What are the most common teething signs and symptoms?

You might notice teething signs and symptoms in your baby a few days or even weeks before the first tooth comes through. Teething signs and symptoms can range from being unnoticeable to quite obvious pain and discomfort. Most babies only show mild teething sings that last just a few days, however for others teething is very painful and distressing for both parents and baby and can last for weeks on end. Common teething signs and symptoms include the following:

  • Sensitive swollen gums,
  • Rubbing or pulling on the ear on the side the tooth is coming through,
  • Fussiness around food,
  • Waking regularly at night and being more unsettled than usual,
  • Dribbling more than usual,
  • Reddish cheeks,
  • General grumpiness and being extra clingy.

There are a lot of different pharmaceutical options when it comes to teething pain relief, however, the good news is that there are some fantastic, safe, effective and natural teething remedies to soothe even the worst teething symptoms, including Punkin Butt Teething Oil, Iris Root Teether, Sophie the Giraffe and Baltic Amber.
